10 ways to enjoy the longer evenings

As the clocks jump forward and spring stretches out the evenings, that extra daylight feels like a little gift. So, how to spend it? Here are ten easygoing, joyful ways to ease into the brighter season.
Potting and pouring
Mix a little gardening with a splash of something nice. Invite a few friends over for a “plant and sip” session. Think mini pots of herbs or cheerful flowers to take home, paired with a glass of something fun or fizzy. Earthy hands, happy hearts.
Sunset stroll, snack in tow
Grab a blanket and a few simple bits to nibble, and head to your favourite green spot. A golden sky, some fresh air, and a posh crisp sandwich might just be the midweek magic you didn’t know you needed.
Host a Spring BBQ
Time to dust off the tongs. Whether it’s a low-key burger night or something a bit more adventurous (BBQ chicken with maple vinegar, cranberries, and almonds, anyone?), spring evenings are made for alfresco dining without cutlery.
Sunset cocktails
Sangria at sunset? Yes please. Mix up a jug of something light and fruity, find a patch of evening sun, and sip like you’re on holiday – even if you’re only a few steps from your kitchen.
Outdoor cinema night
Blankets, popcorn, fairy lights, and a projector if you’ve got one. Or just a laptop and some cushions will do. Pick a feel-good film and let the evening roll on under the stars.
Scavenger hunt, Spring edition
Whether you’ve got kids to entertain or friends who’ll humour you, put together a little hunt. Think cherry blossoms, butterflies, or anything else that screams ‘Spring is here’.
Book club!
Longer evenings are made for getting stuck into a new read – or pretending to, while you drink tea and catch up with your mates. A book club doesn’t have to be serious. Some of the best ones don’t even talk about the book.
A bit of evening sport
There’s a sweet spot in spring where it’s light enough to play outside and warm enough to not regret it. Grab a bat, a ball, or a frisbee and play until the sky fades.
Diy paint and sip
No studio needed. Grab some paints, something to draw on, and a drink. Follow a tutorial or go rogue. It’s about switching off, not showing off.
Call it a Spring social
Use the lighter evenings as an excuse to bring people together. Whether it’s dinner, a drink, or a doorstep catch-up, this time of year is made for reconnecting.
Longer evenings are a quiet little nudge to do more of what makes you feel good. So go on, open the windows, stretch your legs, and let spring in.
